MILLENNIAL HISTORY

Various records assert that the origins of Cantù bobbin lace, must undoubtedly be traced back to the activity carried out mainly by religious institutes in the period of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

There are evidences that allow us to understand and wonder about the exact birth of lacework because by studying on some ancient texts and observing some archaeological objects, such as paintings, statues and engravings it was possible to understand that :

- in Egypt even before the birth of Christ they were already performing almost similar work;

- in ancient Greece they used to weave threads;

- etc..

Certainly lace in our area, called Brianza, was worked by the women of the people aided and assisted by nuns. According to a widespread opinion it was the Benedictine nuns of Cluny.

Thanks to the merchants and the relevant demands in the 16th century, the women who applied themselves in this work were not only low class or the nuns, but also the ladies of high society, enticed and interested in demonstrating their skills to other courtiers.

At present, there is no woman who can trace the method of work used in earlier years, and the demand for Cantù lacework was highly successful in the 1890s-1900s.
