“Stappo” – Design Project by Paolo Albano
“Stappo” is the name of the bottle holder designed by architect and designer Paolo Albano, presented on 12 November 2021 during the 9th Cantù Wood Festival.
This wooden object pays homage to Cantù Lace (Pizzo di Cantù) and to the work of Marelli Pizzi. Albano brings the identities of Italian craft culture into the present and creates “Stappo”: not just a bottle holder, but a small design manifesto.
On 10 November 2021, in a well-known pub-restaurant in Milan – a place filled with art, where an eclectic collection of objects inspires many artists – “Stappo” was presented as a gift to Mr. Marco Camisani Calzolari (MCC).
With its simple yet flexible structure, the object speaks of tradition, wonder and the joy of living. Albano combines art and design to promote local heritage by integrating it into contemporary production.
This approach has been brilliantly explored over the years by numerous designers whose works have been exhibited at the International Biennial of Lace in Cantù. They have given new life to this art, opening fresh cultural and emotional perspectives through unique, high-value pieces: Marcello Morandini, Alessandro Mendini, Andrea Branzi, Angela Missoni, Anna Gili, Elena Salmistraro, Lombardini22, Luca Scacchetti, Martino Gamper, Michele De Lucchi, Nanda Vigo, Nanni Strada, Patricia Urquiola, Terry Dwan, Thessy Schienholzer, Ugo La Pietra, among others.
According to Albano’s vision, the project is clear in its concept and “defined by a simple and highly flexible typological articulation.” “Stappo” can hold both wine and sparkling wine bottles without altering the essential character of the design. Its outer shapes are inspired by the typical patterns of bobbin lace known as Pizzo di Cantù.
The traditions of Italian know-how are perfectly aligned with Albano’s philosophy of “reinterpreting local traditions of excellence”, a key theme for understanding our increasingly global future.
The chosen solution focuses on low environmental impact, using wood as the material with “heart and soul” at the core of the project. The idea was enthusiastically embraced by Fratelli Rossi of Cantù, a company that since 1963 has worked with more than 40 different product types, where wood truly becomes passion. The craftsmanship is entrusted to a Social Solidarity Cooperative, whose carpentry workshop promotes the inclusion of people in difficulty within the world of work, offering them a profession and hope for a better future.
The project was presented at the 9th Cantù Wood Festival (12–21 November 2021), and the name “Stappo” evokes the sound and spirit of a toast among friends.
“Knowledge of traditions and their nourishment is like a great laboratory we must always look to,” concludes Arch. Paolo Albano. “They are the foundation for sowing our know-how as an asset for an ever more fluid creative language.”
The project was developed thanks to the Marelli family of Cantù, who challenged the renowned designer to translate into form the emotions that Pizzo di Cantù evokes.
The Marelli family is an important voice in the world of Cantù Lace: historically qualified both as merchants and producers, today they are recognised experts in this art.
The first orders for “Stappo” have already arrived from Casa Vinicola Ostinelli in Lipomo and ViniBranca in Mariano C., well-known distributors in the Ho.Re.Ca. sector.
